ABERDEEN, Md. (

www.USABaseball.com) -- The 2004 USA Baseball National Team made its debut with a paired down 22-man roster and exploded on offense for season highs with 17 hits and seven extra base hits en route to an 11-4 victory over Canada Sunday afternoon at Ripken Stadium.

Head coach Frank Cruz announced early Sunday the 22-man roster after the completion of the National Team Trials that will compete in the USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series and the FISU World University Games. The roster includes three players from Texas and one from College World Series Champion Cal State Fullerton, USA improved to 5-0 in the Friendship Series against Canada and leads the all-time series 48-9 dating back to 1987.

After a 5 a.m. wakeup call and a six-hour bus ride from Durham, N.C., the Team USA offense didn’t skip a beat by exploding for 17 hits and scored in double-digits for the second time in the last three games. Five Americans recorded multi-hit games, led by left fielder Travis Buck (So., Arizona State, Richland, Wash.) and center fielder Trevor Crowe (So., Arizona, Portland, Ore.). Crowe went 4-for-5 finishing a home run short of the cycle with two doubles, a triple and three runs scored. Buck continued his hot-hitting going 4-for-5 and leads Team USA hitting .875 (7-for-8).

Team USA starting pitcher Cesar Ramos (So., Long Beach State, Pico Rivera, Calif.) was masterful limiting the Canadians to three hits and one run in six innings. Ramos, a second-team All-Big West selection who was 12-4 with a 2.29 ERA for LBSU in 2004, struck out six and did not walk a batter to improve to 2-0 on the summer and run his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 11 innings (12 K’s, 5 H, 0 BB). Tennessee RHP Luke Hochevar (So., Tennessee, Fowler, Colo.) earned the save scattering six hits and three runs in the final three innings.

The Red, White and Blue recorded five hits while sending nine batters to the plate in the frame. Crowe led off with a double down the right field line and scored on a double by first baseman Alex Gordon (So., Nebraska, Lincoln, Neb.). Zimmerman singled up the middle to drive in two more runs to extend the lead to 3-0 and right fielder John Mayberry Jr. capped the rally with a run-scoring single up the middle.

Zimmerman continued his power surge with his second home run of the summer to lead off the third inning, giving Team USA a 5-0 lead. The first-team All-ACC selection finished the day 2-for-5 with three RBI.

Canada finally got to Ramos in the fourth with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Catcher Jake Elder broke up the shutout with a run-scoring groundout.

USA added a pair of two-out runs in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Crowe doubled down the left field line and came into score on a double to right-center by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (So., Long Beach State, Sunnyvale, Calif.). Gordon also had a RBI single to right field to plate Tulowitzki.

After USA scored two more runs in the sixth to take a 9-1 lead, Canada rallied for three runs off Hochevar in the seventh inning to pull to within five runs at 9-4. Elder, a second-team All-Big Ten selection from the University of Minnesota, doubled in a run to start the rally and right fielder Jeff Tobin plated two with a single to right field. Hochevar settled down to strikeout the side to end the rally.

Canada starting pitcher Josh Krywionek took the loss giving up 12 hits and nine runs in five innings. Elder was 2-for-4 with two RBI and is hitting .333 in the series against Team USA. No other Canadian had more than one hit.

Canada and the USA Baseball National Team will complete the six-game Friendship Series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. in Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Coastal Federal Field). Team USA will then travel to Japan for the five-game USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series (July 2-8).

Game Notes: Team USA scored in the first inning for the third straight game" USA now has 58 hits and 50 runs on the season, averaging 10 runs per game and 11.6 hits per game" Zimmerman leads Team USA with two home runs after hitting only one in two seasons with an aluminum bat with the University of Virginia" Team USA now has nine home runs in five games" the seven extra base hits were also a season high" added four more stolen bases (4-for-5) and is now 22-for-25 on the summer" USA scored six of their 11 runs with two outs, continuing a trend of 31 of the season total 50 runs (62%) crossing the plate with two outs on the scoreboard" Hochevar’s save was Team USA’s first of the summer.
