Gordon Named First-Team All-American

Lincoln ? University of Nebraska third baseman Alex Gordon was honored Sunday, as he was selected to Sports Weekly’s All-American team.

Gordon, a 6-foot-1, 215-pounder from Lincoln, is the 16th first-team All-American in the program’s history and the first Husker to earn first-team accolades since Jed Morris and Jeff Leise in 2002. A Howser Award semifinalist and a member of the Golden Spikes Watch List, Gordon will travel to Durham, N.C., next month to compete for a spot on the USA Baseball National Team.

The sophomore concluded the regular season leading the Huskers in almost every offensive category, batting .365 with 18 homers and 75 RBIs. He ranked among the Big 12 leaders in all three categories, as well as leading the league in both on-base (.493) and slugging percentage (.754). Gordon paced the Huskers in hits (77), runs scored (64), doubles (18), triples (five), total bases (159) and walks (47), while stealing 12 of 14 bases. Gordon started all 59 games and played in 520 of 524 innings in the field, including every inning during league play.

Gordon was the only Big 12 player selected to the first team, while Texas Tech first baseman Josh Brady and Texas left-handed pitcher J.P. Howell were both second-team honorees.

The Huskers finished the regular season with a 36-23 record and reached the Big 12 Tournament, where they went 1-2, including a split of games against No. 1 Texas. The Big 12 Conference will announce its all-league teams Monday morning.
