MILWAUKEE ? Nebraska bowler Shannon Pluhowsky continued her record breaking campaign this weekend, winning the inaugural Collegiate Singles Championships Saturday evening in Milwaukee.
Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.) the three-time defending national amateur champion, defeated West Texas A&M's Tina Stickney, 3-2 in the high-scoring best-of-five finale to claim the crowns.
The left-handed Pluhowsky placed first in the eight-game qualifying round on Friday, which included a 300 game, before defeating Kansas' Leanne Downey, 3-0 in round 1 of match play. In rounds 2 and 3, Pluhowsky remained undefeated by downing Lindenwood University's Kimberly Richter, and Florida State's Teresa Scanlon.
Pluhowsky, a member of the 2004 NCAA Women's Bowling champions and the MVP of the 2004 NCAA championships, downed Stickney 265-238 in game 1 of the championship match, but Stickney came roaring right back in game 2 by rolling a 278 to Pluhowsky's 245. Pluhowsky outlasted Stickney in game 3 255-237 and clinched the title in dramatic fashion 257-226.
"This was a good ending to the last couple of weeks, having bowled WIBCs (Women's International Bowling Congress Championship Tournament), the WIBC Queens and now here," said Pluhowsky, who placed tied for 7th at the recently completed WIBC Queens and currently ranks in the top 30 in both doubles and all events at the WIBC Championship Tournament. "This is my first collegiate singles title, and the last week (at the Queens) helped me practice on a tough shot to get ready and have a good ball reaction."
The event played host to the top 16 male and top 16 female collegiate bowlers in the country competing for national collegiate singles titles.
Pluhowsky took home the Marion Ladewig Trophy and earned an automatic berth into the 2005 USA Bowling National Amateur Championships.
The Collegiate Singles Championship replaces the Association of College Unions International Men's and Women's National Championships as the premier individual college bowling event supported by College Bowling USA and sponsored by the American Bowling Congress and Women's International Bowling Congress.
