Men's Tennis Adds Second Recruit

Lincoln, Neb. --- Marcus Karner, one of the top junior tennis players in Sweden, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Nebraska and compete for the men's tennis team starting in the 2004-05 academic year, NU Coach Kerry McDermott announced Monday. Karner is the second athlete to join the Huskers' recruiting class for next year, along with Jack Baker, at top 100 player in the world junior rankings.

"We're excited to have Marcus joining our program and think he can help us immediately," McDermott said. "He will be able to play both singles and doubles and provide more competition for our squad. We can't wait to get him here in August and start working with him."

A native of Orebro, Sweden, Karner already owns a strong resume before joining the Huskers. In 2001, he won the Swedish junior doubles national title and was a doubles quarterfinalist in the B18 2003 Vasteras Tournament. Karner has ranked among the top 10 juniors in Sweden for several years, ranking as high as No. 5 nationally.

Karner, who was previously a member of the Swedish Junior National Team, is also a top student who ranks in the top two in his graduating class.
