Lincoln -- Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson announced Wednesday that Keith Zimmer has been promoted to the position of Assistant Athletic Director for Student Life.
Zimmer originally joined the Athletic Department staff in 1988 and most recently served as the Associate Director of Academic Programs and Director of Life Skills. In his position, Zimmer directs the career counseling program for student-athletes and Nebraska’s community outreach program.
"Nebraska has always been committed to giving our student-athletes a total college experience," Pederson said. "For years, Husker athletes have known that Keith Zimmer was at the heart of the growth and development of each student. He has a nationally recognized reputation for LifeSkills and leadership among athletic administrators. This promotion recognizes his prominent role in an area that touches the life of every student-athlete."
Zimmer is regarded as a national leader in the LifeSkills area. In 1997, he was selected as a trainer for the NCAA LifeSkills program, and in 1998-99, Nebraska’s LifeSkills program received the prestigious Program of Excellence Award. Zimmer oversees the athletic department’s Student-Athlete Advisory Board and is a board member of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. He is a two-time recipient of the Award of Excellence for his leadership and commitment to the Lincoln Public Schools and Ventures in Partnership program.
Zimmer is also an honorary member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and Mortar Board and has received the Chancellor’s Award for Exemplary Service to Students.
"It is an honor to work for the Nebraska Athletic Department and I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities this presents," Zimmer said. "I have a great loyalty and respect of the University of Nebraska and I hope to continue to have an impact on our great student-athletes and the athletic department as a whole."
Zimmer earned his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State College and his master’s in education from Springfield (Mass.) College. Zimmer and his wife, Michelle, have two sons, Logan, 5, and Caden, seven months.
