Huskers Bounce Back on Day Two

College Station, Texas ? The Nebraska women’s golf team recovered on Saturday, in the second round of the Big 12 Championships with a team score of 307 to finish 10th after a dismal first round on Friday at Pebble Creek Country Club. The Huskers moved up to tenth place with a two-round tally of 622. The tournament was delayed by three-hours and 45 minutes due to rain, but the elements did not bother the Huskers.

“It started off a little shakey with the conditions, but they stayed focused and really battled until the end. I think we made some good improvements today,” Head Coach Robin Krapfl said.

Senior Stephanie Schaefer (Columbus, Neb.) led the Huskers with a second-round score of two-over par-74, a six-stroke drop from her tally on day one.  She is now tied for 25th place with a two-round score of 154.

Sophomore Jackie Beste (Sauk Centre, Minn.) had another solid round on Saturday, shooting three-over par-75 to move up to tie for 14th place.

“I’m really excited about Jackie’s performance,” said Krapfl. “She is just playing solid golf. Jackie is real confident on the golf course and driving the ball very well, also. The way she played in Tucson (at the Mountain View Collegiate), and now the Big 12s is really a great sign for next season. We need someone like that to step up.”

Rounding out the top-30 golfers is junior Merynn Ito (Aiea, Hawaii) who is tied for 30th after shooting a pair of six-over par-78s in the first two rounds of action.

Nebraska is 30 strokes away from first place Texas (592), while the host Texas A&M is in second with a two-round total of 599.

The Big 12 Championships conclude on Sunday, April 25 with a shotgun start of 8 a.m., weather permitting.
