The Nebraska Athletic Department has announced that 13 members of the 2003 Husker football program have been named to the eighth annual Brook Berringer Citizenship Team.
The Brook Berringer Citizenship Team was established by the Husker football program in honor of former Nebraska quarterback Brook Berringer, who died in a plane crash in April of 1996. Berringer was a member of NU’s back-to-back national championship teams in 1994 and 1995. He was also one of the most dedicated Husker volunteers in the community with youth, both in Nebraska and in his hometown of Goodland, Kan. The team honors players who display a similar love and dedication for volunteering in the community.
This year’s Berringer Citizenship Team is headlined by receiver Ryan Ommert, a senior on the 2003 squad who will graduate in May with a degree in business administration. This marks the fourth time Ommert, a native of Cambridge, Neb., has been selected to the team. Place-kicker Sandro DeAngelis, fullback Steve Kriewald and receiver Mike McLaughlin were each honored as members of the team for the third time.
Four Huskers?receiver Willie Amos, quarterback Garth Glissman, fullback Dane Todd and receiver Ben Zajicek?were each named to the Berringer Team for a second time. The remaining five Brook Berringer Citizenship Team members were first-time honorees, including defensive tackle Titus Adams, quarterback Joe Dailey, defensive end Jeff McBride, long snapper Jake Peetz and linebacker Chad Sievers.
The Brook Berringer Citizenship Team will be honored in pre-game ceremonies at Saturday’s annual Red- White Spring Game. The awards will be presented by Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson and former Husker and current Kansas City Chief Will Shields. The all-pro offensive guard was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in January. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is the only NFL award that recognizes a player’s off-the-field community service as well as his playing excellence.
