James Shuts Down Baylor in 2-0 Win

Lincoln ? Senior right-hander Peaches James tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the No. 21 Nebraska softball team to a 2-0 win over No. 19 Baylor Saturday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium. With the win, James improved to 19-5 on the season and picked up her 80th career victory, becoming just the third pitcher in school history reach 80 wins.

With the win, the Huskers improved to 24-11 and 4-0 in the Big 12 Conference. NU, which has won 13 of its last 16, extended its winning streak to six. Baylor lost for the first time in league action, falling to 5-1 in the Big 12 and 35-8 overall. The Bears and Huskers will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bowlin Stadium.

James, who also became just the third pitcher in NU history to toss 80 complete games, struck out seven and retired the last 13 Baylor batters she faced. James faced just one over the minimum and yielded only one walk.

Senior left-hander Cristin Vitek (20-4) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in a complete-game effort. Vitek struck out three and walked three. It was just the second time this season that Vitek has allowed more than one earned run.

Offensively, the Huskers were led by junior second baseman Anne Steffan, who was 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore outfielder Trisha Tannahill drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the first. Tannahill leads NU in game-winning RBIs with five.

The Huskers continued their 2004 first-inning success, jumping to a 1-0 lead when Tannahill laced a one-out double to right field with two runners on base, plating Trimboli. After James struck out, Vitek walked Linke to load the bases for Lawhorn. Vitek then walked the senior outfield, sending Lawrick across the plate for a 2-0 Husker lead.

After leaving a runner on in the fourth, the Huskers loaded the bases with one out in the fifth but couldn’t score. Yolo, Yoachim and Steffan produced consecutive singles. Pinch runner KoKo Tacha was thrown out at home when Trimboli sent and grounder to second base. Lawrick then popped up to third to end the inning.
