The workout was originally scheduled for Memorial Stadium, but rainy weather forced the Huskers inside for the second time in their first four spring practices. Nebraska went through the practice in full pads, the team’s second straight day in full gear after opening spring ball with two days of workouts in sweats and helmets.
“We are pleased with the effort and work we are getting, we are still just working on our execution,” Callahan said. “We’ve got to get on track in terms of the throwing game. It is a work in progress in terms of the offense. We are throwing a lot of things at them. From a volume standpoint, a lot of plays are going in. Next week we will cut back, so we can really focus in on the execution of the system.”
Callahan said the offense will spend a large portion of next week working on short-yardage and goal-line situations.
The coaching staff has been pleased with the work of the defense during the first week of practice. Callahan specifically complimented the defensive line as a group that has excelled in week one, and a unit that rounds out a potentially strong defense.
“Our defensive line has really stood out,” Callahan said. “Those guys up front really generate some push and excellent pass rush. They are more complete as a position. I look at our linebackers. We’ve got guys that come downhill, run and hit. And of course, our secondary is very well-versed and very athletic. I’m really pleased with our defense where we are at.”
Nebraska will begin its second week of spring practice on Monday with practice scheduled for 4 p.m. The Huskers will also practice on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday next week.
