Tucson, Ariz. ?After scoring a first round tally of 307, the Nebraska women's golf team went on to fire a season low of 293 in the second round at the Mountain View Collegiate, Saturday afternoon. The Huskers ended the day tied for seventh place in a field of 17 teams on the 5,982-yard, par 72 course.
"We played good," Head Coach Robin Krapfl said. "We were determined to break out of the slump we were in."
The Huskers surpassed their previous season low of 297, scored in the second round at the Chip-N Club Invitational last fall, by four strokes.
Leading Nebraska into round three of the tournament is senior Stephanie Schaefer (Columbus, Neb.), who is tied for 21st place with a two round score of 149. Schaefer, along with two other Huskers, Merynn Ito (Aiea, Hawaii) and Jackie Beste (Sauk Centre, Minn.) all shot a solid second round of one above par-73. Making her first start of the spring season, Sara Sackett (Cambridge, Neb.) fired a personal season low of two above par-74 in the second round.
"Sara just played real steady," said Krapfl. "She hit a lot of good shots and just stayed in control."
Ito, Beste and Sackett are tied for 33rd with a two-round score of 151. Chrissie McArdle (Eden Prairie, Minn.) sits tied for 41st place by posting a 76 in both rounds. In all, just three strokes separate the Huskers from one another.
"Everyone contributed," said Krapfl, "it was a total team effort."
The Huskers are tied for seventh place with co-host Colorado State (308-292-600) entering Sunday's final round. Denver is comfortably in the lead with a two-round score of 588. Nebraska is twelve strokes away from the first place Pioneers, who have a five stroke lead over second place Iowa State. The Huskers are one stroke outside of fifth place held by Kansas and Washington State. Cougar Kim Welch is in first place with a two-round score of 141.
The third and final round of the Mountain View Collegiate will be played on Sunday with a shotgun start of 9 a.m. central time.
