Boise, Idaho -- The Nebraska men's tennis team saw its four-match winning streak snapped Friday as the Huskers fell to No. 60 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-1, at the Boise State Holiday Inn Invitational. The Huskers fell to 7-6 on the year and now own a 2-5 record against ranked opponents in 2004.
"We played a competitive match and played tough on almost every court in the first set," said Coach Kerry McDermott. "We definitely had an opportunity to win several of the first sets but didn't, and that carried over to the second set. I wasn't disappointed with the way we competed hard and battled to the end. Now we want to come out and finish strong Saturday and end the weekend with a 2-1 record.
"That would be a good mark because there are several tough, ranked teams here. This will help us get ready for Big 12 play. We haven't played our best tennis as a team yet and we will only get better as the season progresses. We just have to keep working at it, but we are making a step in right direction."
Junior Joel Reckewey picked up the Huskers' lone victory with a come-from-behind win over Oscar Roman, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 6 singles slot. It was Reckewey's third straight singles win and fourth in the past five matches.
Reckewey was not the only Husker locked up in a tight match, as freshman James Clow also went three sets before falling to Javier Bacaicoa, 6-7, 6-2, 10-7, at the No. 4 slot. Gerhard Posch also pushed Jeremy Bolandin at No. 1 singles before dropping a 6-4, 6-4, contest while Joerg Barthel fell to No. 90 Gancalo Fiegueiredo, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 2 position. It was Fiegueiredo's 11th win in his last 12 matches this spring.
In doubles action, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi swept the Huskers. Jose Rivera and Barthel fell for the first time in eight matches, dropping an 8-4 decision to Oscar Roman and Figueiredo at the No. 2 position. Reckewey and Justin Junck fell to Bolandin and Luis Moris, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles, while Posch and Ryan Jay dropped their second straight decision at the No. 3 slot, falling to David Plasencia and Bacaicoa, 8-2.
Nebraska returns to action on Saturday, March 27, in the final day of competition at the Boise State Holiday Inn Invitational. The Huskers will face New Mexico State at 1 p.m.
