Huskers Cruise to 6-1 Victory over Idaho

Boise, Idaho -- The Nebraska men's tennis team continued its hot streak as the Huskers defeated No. 68 Idaho, 6-1, Thursday at the Boise State Holiday Inn Invitational to pick up their fourth straight victory. With the win, the Huskers improved to 7-5 on the season and picked up their second win over a ranked opponent in 2004.

"This was a good win over a ranked team. We are on a little bit of a roll and hopefully we will be able to keep it up," said Coach Kerry McDermott. "The guys have become more confident and started to belive in each other a little more. We expect a tough match Friday, but we'll go out and try to keep it going."

The Huskers came out in impressive fashion by sweeping doubles play for just the second time this season, and the second time in four matches. Justin Junck and Joel Reckewey earned an 8-3 victory over Brad Lum-Tucker and Chris Faulman at the No. 1 position. It was just the Huskers' second victory at the top doubles spot this season.

Jose Rivera and Joerg Barthel improved their winning streak at No. 2 doubles to seven straight matches with a 9-8 win over Idaho's Seth Banks and Fabian Dummet. Gerhard Posch and Ryan Jay completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot.

In singles action, Lum-Tucker defeated Posch at the No. 1 slot in a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, thriller to pick up Idaho's only point of the contest. From that point, the Huskers reeled off five straight singles wins, including a solid 3-6, 7-5, 10-4, come-from-behind victory by Barthel at the No. 2 position.

Rivera added his fourth consecutive singles victory with a straight-set 6-0, 6-2, victory over Hector Mucharraz, while James Clow (No. 4 singles) and Joel Reckewey (No. 6 singles) each earned their third win in the past four matches. Jeff Nabity also picked up a straight-set victory at the No. 5 slot.

The Huskers return to action at the Boise State Holiday Inn Invitational on Friday, March 26 at 12:30 p.m. when NU takes on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
