The Specialists Briefly...Nebraska has consistently boasted one of the nation's top special teams units and Callahan has promised that commitment will continue in 2004. The biggest job of the coaching staff will be replacing All-America punter Kyle Larson who finished his career second on Nebraska's career punting list. Also gone is return man Josh Davis who broke nearly every school record while handling kickoff return duties the past three years and doubled last season as NU's punt returner.

Place-kicker David Dyches returns after putting together a strong season as a freshman in 2003. Dyches connected on a Husker freshman-record 14 field goals and was perfect on PAT duties. He will battle senior Sandro DeAngelis for the starting position. DeAngelis opened last season as NU's starter, but gave way to Dyches in game two.

Junior Sam Koch handled Nebraska's kickoff duties in strong fashion for the second half of the 2003 campaign. This spring, he is the top contender to take over Larson's role as the starting punter. Koch has backed up Larson the past two years, but did not kick in a game.

The Huskers will audition numerous candidates to replace Davis in the return game. Junior I-back Cory Ross and junior free safety Josh Bullocks saw limited action as punt returners last season. Sophomore Lane Kelly returns after handling NU's long-snapping chores a year ago, and senior Kellen Huston served as Nebraska's top holder in 2003.
