Dallas -- Nebraska’s Peaches James has been selected as the Big 12 Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. The senior right-hander won the honor after she went 3-1 and did not allow an earned run in 22 innings at the Florida State Invitational March 12-14 in Tallahassee, Fla.
In five appearances last weekend, James posted a 0.00 ERA and allowed only seven hits (all singles). She tallied 32 strikeouts (1.45/inning) and struck out at least 10 in two of her three starts over the weekend. James tossed three complete-game shutouts, including a one-hitter against Penn State, while holding opponents to a meager .097 batting average.
In the Huskers’ first game of the tournament against Penn State March 12, James notched her 70th career victory to become just the fourth pitcher in school history to win at least 70 games. Her eighth strikeout of the game pushed her total to 100 for the season.
Overall in 2004, James (11-4) has a 0.93 ERA and has struck out 124 batters in 90.2 innings. The Papillion, Neb., native has gone 33.2 innings without allowing an earned run.
James has been named the Big 12 Softball Pitcher of the Week four times during her career and twice this season. She also won the honor Feb. 17 in the second week of the 2004 season.
James and the No. 20 Huskers (16-9) are in Fullerton, Calif., this week after a 5-1 performance at the FSU Invitational. The Huskers’ first game at the Kia Klassic is Wednesday, March 17, when they face No. 3 Florida State at 7 p.m.
