Huskers Close Regular Season With Tournament Title

Birmingham, Ala. ? The Nebraska bowling team closed the regular season in dominant fashion, cruising to the title of the Collegiate Holiday Classic Saturday afternoon.

The Huskers, who won six of eight tournaments during the season, won the tournament with a 10-0 record over two days of competition, easily topping runner-ups Central Missouri State and Wisconsin-Whitewater, which tied for second with 7-3 marks.

“I’m real happy with the way we bowled this weekend,” NU Coach Bill Straub said. “It was a nice way to win, and we were a lot sharper this weekend than last weekend in New Jersey. It is good to go into nationals with some momentum.”

Shannon Pluhowsky won her fourth tournament title of the season and 10th of her three-year career, averaging a 242 over 10 games. Her total was the third-highest tournament average in school history, as she now holds top four marks on NU charts.

“It was good to see Shannon come out and turn in a dominant performance,” Straub said.

The junior All-American led a contingent of three Huskers who placed in the top five. Freshman Adrienne Miller was third overall, matching her best finish of the year, with a 225 average while sophomore Jen Schultz was fifth with a 216 average.

The Huskers will wait to see if they receive one of the eight bids for the first-ever NCAA Bowling Championships when they are announced later this month. The championships take place in Houston, Texas, April 8-10.
