Chanek Fares Well at NCAAs

Murray, Ky. ? Sophomore Misty Chanek fired an 1164 in smallbore to finish in 10th place in the individual competition on Friday at the NCAA Rifle Championships.  She also ended the day tied for 11th in air rifle, shooting a 389.  Freshman Kristina Fehlings, also competing in the air rifle individual championships, fired a 383 in finishing 20th.

Nebraska Head Coach Launi Meili felt that while the two did not perform as well as they may have hoped, the experience will provide them something to build off for Saturday’s team championships.

“The tension and pressure in the range is very high at a championship event,” Meili said.  “They are shooting shoulder to shoulder with the best in the country.  Both Misty and Kristina struggled early, but were able to pick it up toward the end.  Today’s experience is definitely something that can be built off in the team championships.”

Murray State senior Morgan Hicks won the NCAA individual air rifle title, firing a 398 out of a possible 400, while Alaska-Fairbanks' Matthew Rawlings won the NCAA individual smallbore title, shooting an 1179 in a tightly contested competition.

The Huskers will return to the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range on Murray State University campus Saturday morning for the team competition, beginning at 8 a.m.
