Austin, Texas -- The Nebraska swimming and diving team continued to perform well on the third day of the Big 12 Championships at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas improving to fifth place in the contest (272). Texas is in first place with 642.5 points, followed by Texas A&M (526) and Kansas (361).
In the 400-yard individual medley, freshman Lauren Bailey was NU’s top finisher. Bailey touched the wall in 4:17.57 for a first-place finish more than three seconds ahead of Stephanie Anderson of Texas (4:20.58). Two other Huskers also swam the 400 IM for Nebraska with freshman Casey Schnack finishing in 13th place (4:28.64) and sophomore Courtney Peterson in 16th place (4:30.26).
In the 100-yard butterfly contest, freshman Mallory Keathley touched the wall in 55.67 for a 12th place finish ahead of fellow teammate freshman Bailey Ingles who touched the wall in 56.51 for a 17th place finish.
In the 200-yard freestyle contest, freshman Kate Wheeler was the top finisher for the Huskers finishing the race in 1:50.40 for eighth place overall. Also competing in the 200, were freshmen Michelle Criss (18th, 1:52.89) and Julie McCauley (22nd, 1:54.09).
Freshman Rachel Schlatter had a solid swim in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in a time of 1:03.70, a fifth-place finish for the Huskers. Senior Angie Matheu also had a strong swim in the 100 breast, finishing in seventh place in the event in a time of 1:04.16 along with sophomore Lana Baker (13th, 1:05.32).
In the 100-yard backstroke, the three Huskers competing in the finals were freshmen Emilee Crawford (17th, 58.39) and Keathley (24th, 59.95) and sophomore Danielle Erickson (19th, 58.88).
In the diving well, sophomore Amie Buoy was again NU’s top finisher in the finals where she placed third on the three-meter springboard with a score of 498.60.
NU’s 400-yard medley relay (Crawford, Schlatter, Keathley, Wheeler) touched the wall in 3:49.98 to place sixth.
The Big 12 Championships resume Saturday morning with preliminary heats beginning at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. Results following each event are available at www.texassports.com.
