Huskers Continue to Swim Strong on Second Day of Big 12 Championship

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Austin, Texas -- The Nebraska swimming and diving team continued to perform well on the second day of the Big 12 Championships at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

In the diving well, sophomore Amie Buoy was NU’s sole diver in the finals where she placed fourth on the one-meter springboard with a score of 260.40.

 

In the 500-yard freestyle, freshman Lauren Bailey was NU’s top finisher. Bailey touched the wall in 4:50.85 to place third. Six other Huskers also swam the 500 for Nebraska, but it was freshman Kate Wheeler who picked up NU’s second-best time in the race (4:52.81) putting her in fifth place.  Both Bailey and Wheeler’s times were NCAA provisional cut times for the 500-freestyle contest.  Freshman Casey Schnack (12th, 4:59.59), sophomore Mackenzie Clark (14th, 5:01.26), freshman Julie McCauley (18th, 5:02.32), sophomore Esmie Holderman (20th, 5:02.94) and sophomore Emily Becker (21st, 5:02.99) were the other Husker competitors in the 500.

 

Freshman Bailey Ingles was the lone Husker competitor in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 2:05.27 to place 11th.

 

In the 50-yard freestyle contest, senior Angie Matheu and sophomore Alex King were NU’s competitors. Matheu finished the race in a time of 23.83 for a 14th place finish.  King touched the wall in a time of 24.00, putting her in a tie with Kim Schmugge of Iowa State for 19th place.

 

NU’s 200-yard freestyle relay (King, Matheu, Michelle Criss, Wheeler) touched the wall in 1:35.33 to place sixth.

 

The Big 12 Championships resume Friday morning with preliminary heats beginning at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Meet results available following each event at www.texassports.com.
