Lincoln, Neb. ? University of Nebraska men’s gymnast, Josh Rasile, was honored this week as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s Gymnast of the Week. Rasile, the 2004 Husker captain and only competing senior member of the team has had a remarkable season, earning his place among the nation’s top-ranked gymnasts on the still rings and vault where he is currently rated fourth (9.457) and fifth (9.368), respectively.
Last week against Oklahoma, Michigan, and Minnesota, Rasile grabbed a 9.325 on the floor exercise, a score that topped his previous career best of 9.3, which earned him a fourth place finish at last year’s NCAA Championships. Rasile also took the title on the still rings with a score of 9.6, thus bringing his 2004 event champion total to six, three on the vault and three on rings.
With just three meets remaining before the 2004 NCAA Championships, Rasile is working diligently toward a national championship title in at least one of the three events where he competes. Nebraska head coach Francis Allen feels that this goal is one that could prove quite attainable for Rasile.
“He has got just a couple more things to work out in his performance and then he is going to have a legitimate chance at a national title,” Allen said.
This is the second time in 2004 that a Nebraska gymnast has received this honor with junior Mace Patterson accepting the award just two weeks ago following his performance against Ohio State.
