Former Huskers Have Strong Showings at Pebble Beach

A pair of former Huskers each earned paychecks in their PGA Tour debuts this past week at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on California’s MontereyPeninsula.

                              

Lincoln native Steve Friesen survived the 54-hole cut that included the low 60 players and ties. Friesen completed the tournament with a three-over 75 and finished four rounds of play at one-under par 287, good for a tie for 41st place in the 180-player field. Friesen’s effort earned him a check for $18,550.

 

Gutschewski missed the 54-hole cut by a single stroke, finishing three rounds in even-par 216, after a 69 in Saturday’s third round at Pebble Beach Golf Links. However, the players at even par finished in a tie for 69th place, and each received a check for $9,858.

 

Most PGA Tour events feature a 36-hole cut with the low 70 players and ties advancing to the weekend, however the PebbleBeach’s pro-am format allowed for only the low 60 and ties to play in Sunday’s final round.

 

Gutschewski is fully exempt on this year’s Nationwide Tour, which resumes Feb. 19-22 with the Jacob’s Creek Open Championship in Adelaide, Australia. Friesen is not exempt on either the PGA or Nationwide tours, but may try to qualify for the Feb. 19-22 Nissan Open at Los Angeles’ famed Riviera Country Club. Friesen qualified for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am through a qualifying tournament.
