Huskers Win Three Titles at West Point Open

West Point, N.Y. -- Junior Mace Patterson led the Nebraska men’s gymnastics team Saturday evening, winning two event titles in the individual finals of the West Point Open.

Patterson took first in both the high bar (9.6) and parallel bars (8.8), with his high bar score shattering his previous career high of 9.35 from the Rocky Mountain Open just two weeks ago.  The Huskers' other first place finish came from senior Josh Rasile on the vault (9.4), an event where he remains undefeated in 2004.  Rasile also finished fourth on the rings (9.25), and ninth in the floor exercise (7.75).

Patterson’s other top-10 places were in the floor exercise where he tied junior Tony Burtle, for fourth (8.85), and on the pommel horse where he finished seventh (8.35).  Burtle also finished sixth on the high bar with a score of 9.40, a personal best for him in that event.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Freshman Paul Chumreonlert and sophomore Ray Hacker also earned top-10 finishes in the pommel horse placing fourth (8.7) and fifth (8.65), respectively.

“The guys had some pretty remarkable success today,” head coach Francis Allen said.  “This competition is just one of those experiences that we will hopefully use as a springboard for bigger and better things yet to come.”

Several Husker athletes will travel to Las Vegas next weekend for the Winter Cup. The Huskers' next team competition is set for Feb. 15, when the Huskers play host to Ohio State in a men's and women's double dual.
