Rifle Shoots Best Score of the Season

Colorado Springs, Colo. ? The Nebraska women’s rifle team posted a season-high team score of 6,219 on Friday, eclipsing the previous high of 6,184 set on Oct. 12. NU’s score was enough to defeat UTEP (6,174), but came up short of defeating defending national champion Alaska-Fairbanks (6,302).

Sophomore Misty Chanek led the Huskers in smallbore, firing a personal-best score of 1,184, which earned her sixth place overall. In air rifle, senior co-captain Melissa Downsbrough shot a 390 to finish third overall and lead Nebraska to the highest team score in the event.

In air rifle, NU totaled 1,546, two points ahead of Alaska-Fairbanks (1,544) and 21 points ahead of UTEP (1,525). Chanek fired a 388 and freshman Kristina Fehlings shot a 385 to join Downbrough as NU’s top three shooters. Junior Laura Johnson rounded out the Huskers’ team score with a 383.

In smallbore, Nebraska totaled 4,673 points, 24 points more than UTEP (4,649), but 85 points fewer than the Nanooks (4,758). Downsbrough tallied a season-high score of 1,173 in the event, while Fehlings fired a 1,161. Freshman Stacy Underwood rounded out the team scoring with a 1,155.

NU returns to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. (CST) for a match against Air Force. On the season, the Huskers are 2-0 against the Falcons.
