.Burgoyne Moves to Second in U.S. Amateur Championships

Las Vegas ? Led by freshman Amanda Burgoyne, four current and former Huskers are among the top 14 bowlers after the second day of qualifying at the U.S. Amateur championships in Las Vegas late Wednesday.

Burgoyne, a Newport, Minn., native made one of the biggest jumps in the field, moving from 23rd to second after averaging a 231.875 in Wednesday’s eight-game session. Burgoyne has totaled 3,450 pins through 16 games, trailing Katie Lanehart by just 45 pins.

Shannon Pluhowsky also made a charge on Wednesday, jumping from 14th to sixth, just 194 pins out of first place. The two-time defending U.S. Amateur champion averaged a 209.75 on Wednesday and now has 3,301 pins through 16 games.

Another former U.S. Amateur champion, Diandra Asbaty (Hyman) also climbed through the field, moving from 51st to 13th on Wednesday, as she now has a pinfall of 3,236 after averaging a 205.125 yesterday. Kari Schwager rounds out the Husker contingent, as she is at 3,234 pins through 16 games, two pins behind Asbaty.

The tournament qualifying rounds continue until this evening (Thursday), when the top 24 finishers advance to match play.
