Lincoln -- Nebraska men’s and women’s cross country Head Coach Jay Dirksen announced the team’s 2003 award winners today.
Senior co-captain Ann Gafffigan earned the women’s most valuable runner award for the third straight year. Gaffigan joins Fran ten Bensel (1990, 1991 and 1992) as the only NU woman to win the award in three consecutive years. Junior Anne Shadles was also recognized, being honored as the most improved runner for the second straight season. Shadle becomes only the third Husker to earn the award twice and only the second to be honored in consecutive season, joining Sammie Resh, who earned the award in 1985 and 1986.
Senior Dana Carne was named the men’s most valuable runner, while sophomore Eric Dall was named the most improved runner.
Dirksen also announced the nine Husker letterwinners for the 2003 season. Seven women earned letters, including Gaffigan and fellow senior co-captain Kathryn Handrup, who each earned their fourth letter. Carne and Dall were the only men to earn letters.
