Minneapolis --- The Nebraska swimming and diving team finished the second day of the Minnesota Invitational after receiving solid performances by freshmen Julie McCauley and Lauren Bailey Saturday night.
McCauley had the best finish of the day, earning the silver medal in the 200-yard freestyle. McCauley touched the wall in 1:52.53, just five one-hundredths of a second ahead of third-place Shannon VanCuren of Wisconsin. Carly Piper won the event title in 1:49.46 for the Badgers. Freshman Kate Wheeler also placed in the top 20 for the Huskers, earning a 19th-place finish in the 'C' Final, coming in at 1:55.21.
In the 400-yard individual medley, Bailey earned a fourth-place finish for the Huskers, completing the course in 4:31.05. Freshmen Casey Schnack also picked up a top-10 finish for Nebraska, earning a ninth-place finish while taking the top spot in the 'B' Final in 4:33.05, and sophomore Courtney Petersen was 12th in 4:36.12.
The 800-yard freestyle team of Bailey, Esemie Holderman, Kate Wheeler and McCauley ? all freshmen ? earned a fifth-place finish in 7:37.48 to score for the Huskers as well. NU also received solid performances from Amie Buoy on the 3-meter board, as she placed eighth overall with a score of 455.0, while Rachel Slatter was 10th in the 100-yard breastroke in 1:06.45.
Team scoring was not complete as of late Saturday, but results will be posted on Huskers.com as soon as available.
Nebraska concludes competition at the Minnesota Invitational Sunday, beginning with the preliminary heats at 10 a.m.
