Huskers Roll to Tournament Title in Atlanta

Atlanta, Ga. ? The Nebraska women’s bowling team opened the 2003-04 campaign in impressive fashion, taking first place at the Brunswick Southern Classic Sunday afternoon at Cedar Creek Lanes.

The Huskers posted a 5-0 record in round-robin competition among the NCAA schools in action at the two-day tournament, posting wins over Southern University, North Carolina A&T, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Florida A&M.

"We had a lot of new kids in the lineup and showed some growing pains early," Nebraska Coach Bill Straub said. "Once they got a handle on it, we really started to bowl well, especially today, and we ran away from the field."

Individually, two Huskers were named to the all-tournament team, including junior Shannon Pluhowsky, who was chosen as the tournament MVP. The Phoenix, Ariz., native placed first with an average of 214 in seven games over the two-day tournament. It was the seventh career tournament title for Pluhowsky and her first since the 2001 Blue and Gold Classic. Freshman Adrienne Miller (Albuquerque, N.M.) also was chosen to the all-tournament team, as she placed third with an average of 207.

"If someone would have told me that she (Miller) would finish third in her first tournament when we were recruiting her last spring, I wouldn’t have believed it," Straub said. "She has a lot of potential and to come out and bowl as well as she did in her first tournament really says a lot about her makeup."

In addition to Pluhowsky and Miller, sophomore Jamie Martin (Omaha, Neb.) turned in the best performance of her career, averaging a career-high 217 in the final six games (only bowlers who bowled seven games could be chosen for the all-tournament team).

"I was really happy to see Jamie bowl this well," Straub said. "She started the weekend as our sixth bowler, but once she got in the lineup, she took off and had a fantastic performance."

The Huskers will return to competition next Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-9, when they travel to Wisconsin-Whitewater for the Whitewater Invitational.
