Burgoyne Earns National Honor

Lincoln ? University of Nebraska freshman bowler Amanda Burgoyne (Newport, Minn.) was presented with one of the nation’s top junior bowler honors on Thursday, as she was chosen as the recipient of the 2004 WIBC Alberta E. Crowe Star of Tomorrow Award.

This award, presented by the Women’s International Bowling Congress, is given to a U.S. or Canadian female high school or college student who has excelled in local and national competitions while demonstrating high academic achievement. Burgoyne will be presented with the award during the WIBC Convention in Wichita, Kan., next May.

Burgoyne is currently a two-year member of Junior Team USA and earned two gold medals at the 2003 F.I.Q. Tournament of the Americas earlier this summer. A two-time U.S. Amateur qualifier and Minnesota state amateur champion, she placed seventh at the 2003 national championships. She was the six-time Minnesota Junior Bowlers Tour Bowler of the Year and won the Youth Nationals at the age of 14.

"It’s a real honor to be selected for this award," Burgoyne said. "There are so many wonderful bowlers around the country and it feels awesome that I was chosen. I was excited when the WIBC President (Sylvia Broyles) called me with the announcement."

Burgonye becomes the second Husker bowler to earn this prestigious honor, joining 1999 recipient Diandra Hyman, who bowled at Nebraska from 1999 to 2002. Burgoyne will make her collegiate debut this weekend, as the Huskers will compete in the Brunswick Southern Classic in Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 1-2.
