Huskers Finish Fifth at Big 12 Relays

Ames, Iowa - The University of Nebraska swimming and diving team opened the 2003-04 season with a fifth-place finish at the 2003 Big 12 Relays Friday in Ames, Iowa. The Huskers finished the meet with 37.5 points, just ahead of Kansas (37). Texas won the meet with 119 points, while Texas A&M (90.5) finished second and Missouri (63) took third. Host Iowa State finished fourth (49).

 

NU’s top finish came in the 800-yard freestyle relay, where freshmen Julie McCauley, Kate Wheeler, Lauren Bailey and sophomore Emily Becker led the Huskers to a second-place finish (7:44.39).

 

McCauley, Wheeler and Bailey also combined to lead NU to a third-place finish in the 1,500-yard freestyle relay with a time of 15:15.30.

 

Four NU relays placed fourth on the day. The 300-yard butterfly relay (McCauley, freshman Bailey Ingles and junior Diana Torres) touched the wall in 2:58.35, the 400-yard freestyle relay (senior Angie Matheu, freshman Michelle Criss, sophomore Danielle Erickson, McCauley) finished the race in 3:36.96, and the 150-yard breaststroke relay (sophomores Rachel Schlatter, Lana Baker, Matheu) touched the wall in 1:33.83. NU’s 800-yard medley relay (200, 400, 200) also placed fourth, with sophomore Courtney Peterson teaming with Ingles and Bailey to finish in 8:59.26.

 

The Huskers return home to face Southern Illinois on Oct. 25 at 9:00 a.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Pool in their first home meet of the season.
