Ostermann Wins Three Matches at All-American Championships

Lincoln -- Nebraska's Gitte Ostermann went 3-0 in the prequalifying tournament at the 2003 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships Saturday, Oct. 4, at UCLA and will advance to the event's qualifying tournament Oct. 7-8, at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Ostermann, a junior from Luneburg, Germany, defeated Virginia Tomantis of Mississippi, 6-1, 6-2, before winning a match against USC's Melissa Esmero, 6-1, 6-1. Ostermann then beat Rice's Lauren Archer, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the qualifier.

"Quite honestly, we expected Gitte to do well in this tournament," NU Coach Scott Jacobson said. "We believe Gitte is one of top players in the country, and now that she is completely healthy, she will have the chance to prove it. She is playing at an unbelievable level right now."

The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships features the top players in NCAA Division I tennis. Eight players and four doubles teams from the qualifying round will advance to the tournament's main draw Oct. 9-12 at the Riviera Tennis Club.
