Lincoln ? Freshman Ashley Carter was recognized as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
"I feel like I am learning so much and getting so much more comfortable," Carter said. "We are growing as a team and it has been good so far. I feel like I have been able to contribute, but I would like to contribute more to the team in any way that I can."
The Omaha native had an outstanding weekend for the Husker soccer team, scoring two goals on just two shots last Friday night against Iowa State. Carter almost notched her first career hat trick, but had a goal called back when a foul was called just before she got off the shot.
Carter not only added goals for the Huskers, but helped set sophomore Vern Fitzgerald up with an assist on the Huskers' fourth goal of the contest.
Against Missouri on Sunday, the 5-foot-7 forward provided a great deal of offensive pressure, attempting nine shots, three of which were on goal.
Carter leads the Huskers in scoring with 10 points on four goals and two assists and is the first Nebraska freshman to receive newcomer-of-the week honors. The Omaha Marian graduate has also posted three game-winning goals on the season, including games against Wisconsin, Mississippi State and Iowa State. Brooke Bredenberg was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2.
Colorado's Katie Griffin was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Texas A&M's Kati Jo Spisak garnered Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors. Griffin recorded six points off of three goals in Colorado's wins over Missouri and Iowa State. Spisak earned her fourth shutout of the season against Washington State and tallied 12 saves on the weekend.
The Huskers travel to Texas this weekend to take on Baylor Friday night and Texas Tech Sunday afternoon. Nebraska returns home Oct. 10 to play host to Oklahoma at 7 p.m. at the Abbott Sports Complex.
