Harmon Named to Verizon Academic All-America Team

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Lincoln, Neb. - Senior Cheryl Harmon was honored as a member of the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, announced Thursday afternoon.

Harmon was the only Husker named to the Verizon Academic All-District VII Track & Field/ Cross Country First Team announced May 29, to put her on the national ballot.

 

"This is a terrific honor for Cheryl," head coach Gary Pepin said.  "We had 11 All-Americans at the NCAA Championships, and for Cheryl to do it academically is just as significant."

 

Harmon was named to the women's third team for her 3.911 grade-point average in communication studies.  The Green River, Wyo., native was an All-American in 2000 as a member of the NCAA sixth-place 4x400-meter relay team.

 

The sprinter was a finalist for Nebraska?s 2003 Female Student-Athlete of the Year award and has been a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection.  Harmon has also been a 10-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll member and was a volunteer speaker for 10 outreach events in 2002-03.  Throughout her career, she has posted 10 top-eight Big 12 finishes, including an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter run at the 2002 Big 12 Indoor Championships.
