Husker Rifle Team Looks to Rebound in Kentucky

Lincoln-The Nebraska rifle team looks to get back on the winning track this weekend as the Huskers travel to Murray, Ky., for the Roger Withrow Invitational, hosted by Murray State, beginning Sat at 8 a.m.

NU finished sixth overall last year with a score of 5,998 at the meet including a team seventh-place finish in the smallbore and a third place finsh in the air rifle. Junior Melissa Downsbrough was the top individual shooter for the Huskers, as she took home first in the air rifle (396) and ninth in the smallbore (1,158).

The invitational will take place over the course of three days, with the Huskers shooting on the second day of competition. Other teams competiting include: Murray State, Tennessee Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi, Memphis, Ohio State and St. Louis.

The Huskers are looking to rebound from a pair of tough third-place finishes in Texas against Texas-El Paso and Alaska-Fairbanks two weeks ago. Nebraska fired a team total of 6,132 on Jan. 10, and a team score of 6,098 on Jan.11, while UAF fired team scores of 6,273 and 6,290 to take home first both days.

Following the Withrow Invitational, the Huskers will return to El Paso, Texas, to face Air Force on Feb.7 and will compete at the NCAA Qualifying Meet on Feb. 8. The Huskers downed the Falcons earlier this season in Lincoln, 6,153-6,073, on Oct. 19.
