DALLAS-Texas A&M QB Reggie McNeal, Kansas State FS Bobby Walker, Nebraska specialist Lannie Hopkins, and Oklahoma kicker Trey DiCarlo have been chosen as SBC Big 12 Conference Players of the Week for games of Nov. 9 in voting by a select panel of media covering the Big 12.
McNeal of Lufkin, Texas, Walker of Tyler, Texas, Hopkins of Rowlett, Texas, and DiCarlo of Carrollton, Texas, are SBC Offensive, Defensive and Co-Special Teams Players of the Week.
The Aggies' quarterback also earned National Player of the Week laurels from THE SPORTING NEWS after leading A&M to a 30-26 upset of then-No. 1 Oklahoma. He came off the bench to engineer TAMU's first-ever victory over a top-ranked football squad with 16 carries for 89 yards and a long gainer of 33 yards, 8-for-13 passing for 191 yards and four touchdowns (tied for most ever by a freshman at A&M), and a 61-yard TD throw to Terrence Murphy.
Bobby Walker returned two interceptions for touchdowns to highlight KSU's 58-7 win over then-Top 25-rated Iowa State on national television. He picked off a Seneca Wallace pass on the Cyclones' second play from scrimmage in the second half and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. Some 23 seconds later on ISU's next possession, Walker again picked off a pass from Wallace and went 26 yards for the touchdown. The two interceptions for touchdowns marked the first time in Kansas State history a player has had two picks for scores in a single game, and Walker is the only player in NCAA Division I-A this season to accomplish this feat. He also had three total tackles and two other pass deflections.
Hopkins partially blocked one Curtis Ansel punt and then swatted down a second punt that Aaron Terpening ran back 30 yards for a touchdown to key Nebraska past Kansas 45-7 in Lincoln. It brought the Huskers' team total to five blocks in 2002. DiCarlo made all four of his field goal attempts from 25, 22, 46, and 32 yards, tied the school record and set an OU freshman mark. It was highest field goal total by a Big 12 kicker this season. His 46-yarder was a career-best for the true frosh. Three of his eight kickoffs also were touchbacks and A&M averaged just 15 yards per return on those that were returned.
