Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 16 Nebraska soccer team fell to the fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns, 4-0, Friday night in front of 842 fans at the Abbott Sports Complex.
Kelly Wilson and Kelly McDonald as well as the entire Texas team came out on fire from the beginning and the Huskers never matched the intensity.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
McDonald scored her first career hat trick to give Nebraska their worst home loss in school history. The Huskers had only lost seven games at home over the past eight seasons, including a perfect home season in 2001.
Wilson began the scoring attack for the Longhorns at the 10:05 mark when she beat the Husker defenders and had a clear shot at the net. She continued firing shots, leading the Longhorns with six shots, five of which were on goal.
She was also a key contributor to McDonald’s scoring effort, notching two assists on the second and final goals of the game.
The two Kelly’s had a combined 11 shots and 10 points between them.
The Husker defense played a tough game, thwarting several Texas scoring attacks. Nebraska goalkeeper Erin Miller tied the school record for saves in a single game with 12. The previous record was set by Karina LeBlanc against Texas A&M on Nov. 6, 1998.
Texas also set a record for most shots on goal by a Nebraska opponent with 16, compared to Nebraska’s six. The Longhorns outshot the Huskers, 22-13, for the game. Nebraska outcornered UT, 9-6.
Texas took away Nebraska’s scoring ability away most of the game, keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field. Texas goalkeeper Alex Gagarin grabbed five saves on the night.
The Huskers continue Big 12 action Sunday against No. 8 Texas A&M at 1 p.m. at the Abbott Sports Complex. The game will be broadcast live on KRNU 90.3 and the internet at www.Huskers.com.
