LINCOLN, Neb. -- A premium website, featuring live streaming of exclusive Husker video, will be introduced this fall, pending approval from the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. The NU athletic department plans to partner with New Media Networks, LLC (NMN), a Nebraska-based firm, to offer an innovative, interactive and more in-depth site for fans with premium services and exclusive viewing options.
NMN will join with HuskerVision, Nebraska's in-house video department, to provide Husker fans unprecedented web-based coverage of Husker athletic events. Among the features will be live video streaming of events and interviews, along with archived events and coaches shows. The new site will also have daily updates from the practice site, fan polls, enhanced coverage of events, live postgame interviews, coach and player chats, apparel discounts and other informational pieces not normally available on athletic department sites.
"We are very excited to pursue an innovative plan with New Media Networks that will enable us to bring our fans all over the world even closer to campus," said NU Director of Athletics Bill Byrne. "By providing video footage via the internet, Husker fans and parents will be able to keep abreast of Husker events, practices and coaches shows. We believe this project will classify our school among the technological leaders and yet by partnering with NMN, we will not be required to provide the up-front costs associated with such a detailed project. HuskerVision has entertained our fans on the big screens for 10 years, and now they will bring footage, not available anywhere else, directly into our fans' homes."
The new site will be made available to fans across the country on a subscription basis. The premium website could also provide live streaming of Husker events on a pay-per-view basis. Subscribers will log on into the premium site from the official website of the NU athletic department -- Huskers.com.
As part of NMN's proposal, an improved version of the popular athletics website, Huskers.com, will also be unveiled later this fall. The current free site will remain the primary web-based source for Nebraska athletic news. Radio broadcasts and all news and information currently found on Huskers.com will remain on the public website -- free of charge to Husker fans.
The current HuskersAuthentic.com and HuskerPower.com sites will be incorporated within Huskers.com, to make it the premier NU athletic site that provides fans information, Husker merchandise and athletic event tickets on-line. Nebraska, considered a leader in collegiate athletics, became the first school in the country to have video replay boards at a venue used exclusively for college athletics in 1994. It will again be among the leaders by introducing a subscription web presence, as only one school in the Big 12 and just a few around the country currently have a premium site.
