Husker Track and Field Teams Sign Eight Athletes

LINCOLN, Neb.----- Track and field coach Gary Pepin announced eight athletes have signed national letters-of-intent to join the Huskers in the fall of 2002. Highlighting the list are four individuals from Nebraska, Ashley Selig of Lincoln in hurdles and heptathlon; Kelsi Murman of Glenvil, in pole vault; Aaron Plas of McCook in high jump; and Lucas Horn of Overton in sprints and jumps. Other signees include Maggi Elias of El Cajon, Calif., in heptathlon and hurdles, Oliver Williams from Central Islip, N.Y., in sprints, Eric Dall from Scottsdale, Ariz., in distance and Marcus Sedberry of Lancaster, Texas in sprints.

"The entire Nebraska coaching staff is pleased with the eight athletes who have signed on to become Huskers," head track coach Gary Pepin said. "We believe that each individual will help contribute to the program, and hopefully lead us in achieving our goal of becoming a top 10 team at the NCAA Championships."

On the women's side, Selig competed for Lutheran High School and was the 2001 Nebraska state champion in the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and 400-meter run, Murman of Adams Central High School is the number two ranked female pole-vaulter in Nebraska for the 2002 year.

Elias will transfer to Nebraska from Cuyamaca Community College. Elias recorded the leading time among the California Community Colleges in the 100-meter hurdles with a mark of 14.06.

"Maggi is a very motivated individual and always takes the hurdles to the highest level," Nebraska recruiting coordinator Matt Martin said. "She was dominant in California, and we expect her to continue to dominate against the competitive athletes of the Big 12."

For the men, Plas, who prepped at McCook High School, is the current Nebraska state record holder in the high jump. Plas cleared a height of 7-2 at the Greater Nebraska Conference meet earlier this year.

"Aaron has a tremendous all-time performance record and ranks in the top five nationally. We're excited to have an athlete of his skills here at Nebraska," Martin said.

Horn will come to NU from Overton High School where he was a Nebraska state meet qualifier in four events, the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, long jump and triple jump.

Williams, from Central Islip High School, is the title 2002 New York indoor champion in the 55-meter dash and 300-meter sprints. Dall, representing Christian Academy High School, is the 2002 Arizona 2A state champion in the 800-, 1,600-, and 3,200-meter runs and 4x800-meter relay.
