Lincoln - One day after clinching its third straight regional title, the Nebraska women's gymnastics team learned Sunday who will comprise the rest of the field for the NCAA Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., next weekend.
After finishing the regular season with a 14-2 record, the Huskers will be making their 13th NCAA Championship appearance, including seventh in the last eight years under Head Coach Dan Kendig. Nebraska has qualified for the Super Six Finals in four of the past five seasons, highlighted by a school-record fourth place finish in 2000 and a fifth-place showing last season.
If the eighth-ranked Huskers are to qualify for the Super Six Finals for the fourth consecutive year, they will need to get past a field that includes four of the top six teams according to the final regular-season poll, as a blind draw was conducted Sunday afternoon, placing three regional champions and three runners-up in both sessions.
The Huskers were selected to compete in session one, which will take place on April 18 at 1 p.m. (CST), and will be joined by No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Utah, No. 5 Michigan, No. 6 LSU and No. 12 Arizona. The second session, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (CST) features top-ranked UCLA, No. 2 Alabama, No. 10 Stanford, No. 11 Minnesota, No. 13 Oregon State and No. 15 Florida. The top three teams in both sessions will advance to the Super Six Finals, which takes place on April 19 at 7 p.m.
The Huskers return three athletes who earned All-America honors at last season's NCAA Championships in juniors Julie Houk and Jen French, and sophomore Gina Bruce. In addition, sophomore Alecia Ingram earened All-America accolades in 2001, but is red-shirting because of a shoulder injury.
Next spring, the NCAA Championships will head to Lincoln, as the University of Nebraska will play host to the 2003 Women's Gymnastics Championships from April 24-26, 2003, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
