Huskers Open Up Season With Victory

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska women's tennis team opened its 2002 season with a 7-0 win over Wichita State Friday evening at Woods Tennis Center. The Huskers swept 6 singles matches and the doubles point to raise their record to 1-0, while Wichita State drops to 0-1.

In singles action at No. 1 singles Amy Frisch led the way defeating Wichita State's Amanda Cervantes, 6-2, 6-2.

"I though I played really well." said Frisch "My serving was strong tonight which led to some free points."

Katarina Balan was victorious with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Annelie van den Heever.

In the match of the night, at No. 3 singles sophomore Leslie Harvey defeated Martina Stojkic 6-3, 6-4, in two hard fought sets. Sophomore Anne Oehme picked up her first victory of her Husker career with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sarah Beth Dangos while Rose Ketmayura and Stacey Tomkiewicz also notched win in singles action.

In doubles, Nebraska swept all three matches with Harvey and Ketmayura leading the way with an 8-0 win over Martina Stojkic and Sarah Beth Drangos. The No. 1 doubles team of Frisch and Balan took home a win over Cervantes and van den Heever, 8-2. Oehme and Tomkiewicz completed the sweep in doubles match with an 8-4 win over Cherise Stein and Natalina Guzman.

"I thought we played extremely well," added Frisch. We had good challenge matches that prepared us for tonight"

Nebraska returns to action, this Sunday Jan. 27 against Denver University. The match is scheduled for 10 a, at Wood Tennis Center.
