Reno, Nev. -- Nebraska freshman pole vaulter Danny Tylka, a graduate of Lincoln East High School, finished seventh in Collegiate Division IV at the Pole Vault Summit on Saturday, Jan. 12, with a mark of 15-6.
"He just did a tremendous job and didn't fall apart technically during the competition," Nebraska Pole Vault Coach Rick Attig said. "He actually advanced up to bigger and bigger poles, which is one of the things that we had to work through with him. I felt that if he got on the right pole at the right time he really would really jump high.
"For some young up-and-coming vaulters, they have to work through a few meets to find the right pole that fits their speed and technique. I'm really excited about what he got out of this competition."
Tylka, the only Husker to compete this weekend, claimed the pole vault title and all-class gold medal at the 2001 Nebraska Class A state meet with a meet-record mark of 15-8.
The rest of the Nebraska track and field team will open the indoor season at the Kansas State Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., on Sunday, Jan. 20. The Huskers will play host to the Nebraska Invitational on Jan. 25.
