Komine, Hopper Named to Preseason All-America Team

Lincoln -- A pair of University of Nebraska players were honored Wednesday, as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers unveiled their preseason All-America teams. Senior pitcher Shane Komine (Honolulu, Hawaii) was one of three pitchers selected to the first team, while junior Matt Hopper (Morrison, Colo.) was selected for the second-team

The only two-time All-American in school history Komine compiled a 14-2 record and a 3.35 ERA in a school-record 131.1 innings last season. The 5-10, 175-pound senior won a school-record and league-best 14 games, while also leading the Big 12 in strikeouts (159) and complete games (seven) en route to conference pitcher-of-the-year honors for the second straight season. Komine holds every major pitching record in school history, going 31-8 with a 2.99 ERA in his collegiate career. He also holds school records for wins (31), strikeouts (395) and innings pitched (334.1). He was selected in the 19th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2001 MLB Draft, but decided to return for his senior season at Nebraska.

A two-time All-Big 12 selection, Hopper batted .358 with 12 homers and 85 runs batted in last season. He finished in the top 10 in the conference in walks (42, third), runs scored (65, sixth), hits (91, seventh), home runs (12, seventh), total bases (162, seventh) and doubles (19, 10th). Hopper, whose 85 RBIs is the most of any returning player nationally, ranks eighth in school history in homers (33, eighth) and RBIs (156, eighth).
