Lincoln -- Nebraska Senior Linebacker Jamie Burrow was named this week's (Oct. 29) Bronko Nagurski Player of the Week. Burrow joins a growing list of the nation's top defensive college football players who have been accorded the honor and are being watched as candidates for the annual Bronko Nagurski Award.
Burrow recorded a team- and career-high 17 tackles, including seven unassisted tackles in the Cornhuskers' 20-10 victory over Oklahoma Oct. 27. Burrow added two tackles for losses, including a sack for -12 yards and had one of the team's 14 quarterback hurries. He also helped Nebraska hold the Sooners to 339 yards, including 105 yards rushing.
"I think it is a great honor for Jamie to receive the Big 12 and national honor," Nebraska Coach Frank Solich">Frank Solich said. "He had a great game and making (17) tackles from the linebacker spot is not easy to do because of the number of things we ask our linebackers to do. People around the country recognized the way he played."
The FWAA (Football Writers Association of America) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club pick a Defensive Player of the Week each Monday during college football's regular season. Finalists will be announced in mid-November, and the nation's top all-around defensive player will be announced at the annual Bronko Nagurski Banquet Dec. 10 in Charlotte, N.C.
The Charlotte Touchdown Club is a non-profit organization based in Charlotte, N.C., that raises funds for high school and college scholarships for student athletes participating in their school's football programs. The Charlotte Touchdown Club, with the help of the FWAA, each year presents the national Bronko Nagurski Trophy, named after Hall of Famer and University of Minnesota and Chicago Bear star Bronko Nagurski, to the nation's best all-around defensive college football player.
