McCook Lake, S.D. - Led by a pair of freshmen, members of the Nebraska men's and women's cross country teams turned in solid performances at the Briar Cliff Invitational held in McCook Lake, S.D., on Saturday. Scott Wandzilak was the Huskers' top finisher on the men's side, crossing the line in 26:14, while South Sioux City, Neb., native Anne Shadle finished third in the women's race in a time of 18:35.
Coach Jay Dirksen took only four women and four men to the meet, so neither group had enough members to qualify as a team, but Dirksen said he was pleased with how everyone competed.
"Our men and women really ran well, the best of the year for them," Dirksen said. "I was really excited about the way they improved this week. They competed very well."
NU placed three men among the top four finishers, including freshman Tim Williams, who covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:23, knocking nearly one minute off his previous best time. Sophomore Marc Clinard also ran his best race of the season, finishing third in 26:38, well faster than his previous best time of 28:11.61. Sophomore Hunter Kosman also competed for Nebraska, finishing 20th in 27:48.
In the women's 5,000-meter race, all four Husker representatives improved their times, including sophomore Monica Barger, who finished fourth in 18:38. Freshman Michele Steube finished eighth in 18:45.8, while sophomore Melissa Drozda finished 15th in 19:32.
The Huskers will next be in action Saturday, Oct. 13, when the Huskers' top runners head to the pre-NCAA meet in Greenville, S.C., while the remaining runners will participate in the Tiger Invitational in Hays, Kan.
