Huskers in Sixth at Chip-N Club Invitational

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska womens golf team finished its first round of the Chip-N Club Invitational Sunday at Yankee Hill Country Club in sixth place with an opening round of 311. Leading the pack of teams in the clubhouse is Kent State, who fired a 296 and was led by individual leader Martina Gillens 1-under 71.

Current team and individual standings are still not final for the first round because play was suspended due to darkness, leaving both Lamar and Nebraska-Omaha with one hole remaining to be played. Lamar and UNO will finish their opening rounds Monday at 7:15 a.m.

NU was led in its first tournament of the season by the senior duo of Catha Fogelberg and Amanda Sutcliffe. Fogelberg posted a 2-over 74, while Sutcliffe carded a 3-over 75.

Sunday also marked the debut of Head Coach Robin Krapfls highly touted recruiting class. Merynn Ito, a native of Aeia, Hawaii, posted an 80 and Sara Sackett of Cambridge, Neb., put together a round of 82. Beth Anne Cherry (Lincoln, Neb.) and Stephanie Ruiz (Edmond, Okla.) played as individuals for the Huskers, recording rounds of 84 and 80, respectively.

Rounding out Nebraskas scoring was an 83 from junior Amanda Krane, while sophomore Stephanie Schaefer, who played as an individual, posted a round of 88.

Wisconsins Malinda Johnson provided the excitement for the day when she rolled in a hole-in-one on the 150-yard par-3 fifth. Johnson is currently in a tie for second at even par.

Play resumes tomorrow at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start for the final 36 holes of the tournament.
