Lincoln - University of Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch was tabbed a first-team All-America by Street & Smith's, as the prestigious publication announced its preseason All-America team Tuesday. The three-year starter at quarterback was one of three Huskers to earn first or second team honors, joining tight end Tracey Wistrom and offensive guard Toniu Fonoti.
Crouch was one of three Big 12 players selected to the first team, joining Oklahoma linebacker Rocky Calmus and Texas defensive back Quentin Jammer.
Crouch, who already ranks among Nebraska's all-time leaders in total yardage (5,290, second), passing yardage (2971, sixth) and scoring (252, fifth), is the school's top rushing signal-caller, accounting for 2,319 yards on the ground during his collegiate career. The Omaha, Neb., native was a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award and for the Football News Offensive Player of the Year award last season, after throwing for 1,101 yards and 11 touchdowns, while rushing for 971 yards and a league-best 20 scores. Crouch, who is 24-5 in his Husker career as a starter, was the Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore, leading the Huskers to a Big 12 title and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl.
Wistrom, a two-time All-Big 12 selection, was a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award last season after hauling in 19 passes for 314 yards and five touchdowns last season. With 37 career receptions for 827 yards, the Webb City, Mo., native ranks among the top tight ends in school history and is on the preseason Lombardi Award Watch List.
Fonoti was dominant in his first season as a starter, setting a school record with 155 pancakes - breaking the record for pancakes held by All-America center and Outland finalist Dominic Raiola - en route to second-team All-Big 12 honors. Fonoti, who checks in at 6-foot-4, 330 pounds, helped the Huskers rank first in rushing yardage (349.3) and in the top-six nationally in both scoring (41.5 points per game, fourth) and total offense (459.0, sixth).
Oklahoma (No. 2), Nebraska (No. 5), Texas (No. 6) and Kansas State (No. 11) were all ranked in the top 15 in the magazine's preseason poll accompanying the All-America team.
The Huskers begin preseason preparations on July 31 as the freshman report to fall camp. Returning varsity players arrive on Aug. 3, which is also media day. NU opens the 2001 season against TCU in the Pigskin Classic on Aug. 25, in a game nationally televised by ABC.
