Sasse Finishes Eighth; Qualifies For NCAA Championship

West Lafayette, Ind.–Junior Sarah Sasse became just the fifth player in school history to qualify as a individual for an NCAA Championship after an eighth-place finish Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional in West Lafayette, Ind. As a team, Nebraska fired a final-round 321 to finish in 10th place, six shots off of the needed eighth-place finish to move on to the team championship.

Sasse is joined by Allie Blomquist of Wisconsin as the two top-finishing individuals from non-qualifying teams who will represent the Central Region at the NCAA Championship at the Mission Inn Golf & Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., May 23-25

Sasse, a two-time All-Big 12 selection, fired a final-round 78 en route to a three-round total of 226 (+10). A product of Lincoln High School, Sasse now becomes the first player in school history to participate in two national championships after playing on last season’s NCAA qualifying squad.

The team race was won by 13th-ranked Tulsa, which carded a final-round 313 to edge host-school Purdue by two strokes. Individually, Kari Damron of Purdue shot a one-under 71 in the final round on her home course to take first.

Senior Amy Roux, a four-time Academic All-Big 12 selection, closed out her career at NU with a final-round 79 to finish in a tie for 29th. Junior Catha Fogelberg’s final-round 83 was good enough for a tie for 53rd, while junior Amanda Sutcliffe’s nine-over 81 put her into a tie for 67. Sophomore Amanda Krane rounded out the scoring with an 86.

“We didn’t quite pull it off,” Head Coach Robin Krapfl said. “We got off to a really poor start, playing the first hole eight-over. We just had to battle the rest of the way. Our start today was the key to not qualifying.”
