Season Comes to a Close for Husker Gymnasts

Columbus, Ohio - Competing in his last meet as a Husker, senior Jason Hardabura narrowly missed a berth in the individual event finals of the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships, earning ninth-place finishes on two events Friday night, and missing Saturday's final by one place. Hardabura, who posted a season-high score of 52.70 in the all-around to finish 11th overall, turned in his best performance of the season on the parallel bars, scoring an 8.90 to finish 0.025 points behind Dick Huntwork of Ohio State, who earned the eighth and final qualifying spot. Hardabura also tied his season high on vault (9.20), but again was one place away from qualifying for Saturday's competition as the top eight finishers on each event advanced to the event finals.

Head Coach Francis Allen said he was pleased with the performance of every Husker, noting that all three peaked at the national meet.

"Except for one mistake on pommel horse, Jay was almost perfect tonight," Allen said. "It makes you see that at least the guys are doing the right things in the gym. All the guys did really well, we just didn't have enough of them."

Senior Grant Clinton also turned in a solid performance for the Huskers, tying for 13th on rings with a score of 9.15 and posting an 8.70 on the parallel bars to finish tied for 18th. But unlike Hardabura, Friday's competition may not be Clinton's last in a Husker uniform if his attempts to gain another year of eligibility are successful. The 2001 season was only Clinton's third as a collegiate gymnast, as injuries suffered in an automobile accident following high school prevented him from competing for two years.

Nebraska's third qualifier on the parallel bars, junior Martin Fournier, also turned in a solid performance, posting an 8.525 to tie for 26th.

In a competition that came down to the last event, host school Ohio State upended top-ranked Oklahoma, edging the Sooners 218.125-217.775, for the team title. California finished third (216.775), followed by Michigan (216.175) and Penn State (212.175). Michigan State, which announced earlier this year that it would drop its men's gymnastics program following the season, finished sixth with a score of 211.875.
