DALLAS, Texas -- Nebraska senior All-American sprinter Chris Chandler, who helped the Huskers claim three event titles en route to a team victory at the Jim Click Shootout on Saturday, was named the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Chandler, a Starke, Fla., native won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and ran the second leg of NU's winning 4x100-meter relay team at the quadrangular in Tuscon, Ariz. The senior notched a provisional time of 20.83 seconds in the 200 meters before helping the Huskers' relay team post the second fastest time in school history (39.62). The relay mark is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. In the 100-meter dash, Chandler ran a winning time of 10.35.
Also earning honors from the conference was Kansas State sophomore heptathlete Austra Skujyte, named the Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week. Skujyte, of Lithuania, scored 5,596 points, an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, on her way to the heptathlon title at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
The Huskers will return to action Saturday at the UNO Invitational in Omaha.
