Karaica leads NU on First Day of NCAA Championships

Long Island, N.Y. - Nebraska senior All-American Beth Karaica earned a 17th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.02 to pace the Huskers after day one of the swimming and diving championships. The senior from Natrona Heights, Pa. just misses earning her 10th All-American honor of her career. Freshman Jackie Lobdell finished in 30th place after her showing in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:50.78. Nebraska's 400-yard medley relay team of Lobdell, freshman Carmen Cosgrove, sophomore All-American Elvira Fischer and Karaica, earned a 17th place finish in a time of 3:44.83. After the first day of competition Auburn leads the field with a score of 121.5. Defending champion Georgia follows with a score of 112.5 and Texas is currently in third with a score of 107.5. The 2001 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships continue tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting a 7 p.m.
