Lincoln - The Nebraska women's gymnastics team ended its home season with a bang Monday, posting a school and Bob Devaney Sports Center record score of 197.575 in a dual win over ninth-ranked Iowa State (197.000). With the win, Nebraska extended its home-winning streak to 37, and improved its season record to 12-1 and 4-0 in the Big 12. The Cyclones drop to 8-5 and 3-2 in conference action.
"This was a total team effort tonight, as it always is," Head Coach Dan Kendig said. "We compete very well as a team. It seems like it's always somebody different stepping it up. Although it was a school record tonight and I'm elated by it, I know we're capable of more. I still believe our best gymnastics is ahead of us."
The Huskers started strong on vault, scoring a season-high 49.30, behind freshman Alecia Ingram's career-high 9.975. Ingram, who won her seventh vault title of the season and set a Devaney Center record in the process, became the third Husker gymnast to receive a 10 this season. Harris and freshman Gina Bruce each received a 9.875 to finish tied for third.
Heading into the second rotation, the Huskers trailed by 0.025 points, but had four gymnasts tally a 9.90 or better, en route to a Devaney Center record 49.525. On an event that showcased sophomore Julie Houk and ISU's Sissy Huey, both ranked sixth in the nation on the uneven bars, it was Ingram who captured the event title with a career-high 9.95. With the bars title, Ingram has now won every event at least once this season. In addition, sophomore Jess Wertz finished tied for second with a 9.925, the best mark of her career. Houk and freshman Tami Harris both received a 9.90 to tie with Huey for fourth.
"I think the team learned a lot about themselves tonight," Kendig said. "Especially when we got to bars and we were in a tight meet and our first girl misses bars. It put us under a little bit of pressure to hit our next five routines and we were right at our best on bars. That's what we're capable of doing as team. That's a tribute to the confidence of the rest of the team."
Heading into the third rotation, Nebraska led 98.825-98.475 and extended its lead thanks to a dominating performance on the balance beam. Nebraska placed four gymnasts in the top five, including sophomore A.J. Lamb, who posted a career-high 9.925 to finish second. Ingram finished third with a 9.90, followed by Harris with a career-high 9.875, and sophomore Bree Dority O'Callaghan, who tied her career-best with 9.85. Iowa State's Shelly Kringen, ranked fourth in the nation and first in the Big 12, received a 9.975 to lay claim to the title.
The Huskers finished strong on floor, led by freshman Libby Landgraf and senior Amy Ringo, who both scored a 9.90 to tie for third. In the final home meet of her career, Ringo performed like a veteran.
"She really epitomized what she's capable of doing," Kendig said. "Starting us off on floor and being able to hit her routine and doing it as well as she did, that's her strength, to be able to perform like that."
The Huskers will wrap up the regular season in Tempe, Ariz., when they face Kentucky, Iowa and host Arizona State in a quadrangular March 16.
