Lincoln - In its only home match of the season, the Nebraska rifle team dominated Wyoming on Saturday, defeating the Cowboys 6,134 to 5,600. The Huskers, competing at the Nebraska Rifle Range for only the second time in three years, captured the smallbore and air rifle titles with NU range record scores. The Huskers' smallbore total of 4,593 eclipsed the previous best by 157 points, while their air rifle total of 1,541 bettered last season's high score by three points. Nebraska's previous home match occurred Dec. 4, 1999, and featured teams from Missouri-Kansas City, Texas Christian and Wyoming.
The Huskers were led in the team competition by sophomore Amanda Trujillo, who recorded a personal-best smallbore score of 1,173. It marked the first time in her career that the Brush, Colo., native broke the 1,170 barrier. Trujillo's previous best of 1,169 came on Nov. 5, 1999, at the Walsh Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Joining Trujillo on the smallbore team were freshmen Melissa Downsbrough and Heather Pissos, who finished with scores of 1,155 (3rd) and 1,144 (4th), respectively. Junior Rachel Spiry rounded out the scoring for the Huskers recording a 1,121 to finish fifth. Sophomore Nicole Allaire, whose score did not count toward the team total, fired a season-high 1,173 to tie Trujillo for the title.
Nebraska's air rifle team consisted of Trujillo, Allaire, Downsbrough and Spiry. Trujillo led all shooters with a 389, followed by Allaire with a 386. Downsbrough and Spiry both fired a 383 to tie for third. Freshman Karen Aspden and Pissos competed as individuals, recording scores of 378 and 362 to finish fifth and seventh respectively.
The Huskers
will take a few weeks off from competition before heading
to El Paso, Texas, on Jan. 13, 2001, to take on UTEP. The
following day Nebraska will go head-to-head with defending
national champion Alaska-Fairbanks in El Paso.
